A fitting end to a bizarre period in my automotive history. I bought it with literally no planning, just hopped onto autotrader and sorted new cars by price and proximity. Later that day I’d paid $11,500 (CAD) for a new Kia.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Similarly, I sold it with no planning. I hopped onto autotrader, ran it through the “instant cash offer” engine and presto! Sold it for $9800 after two years of ownership. In that time, I also wrote off the depreciation/interest and other expenses associated with it (maintenance/etc).

I bought this car because I needed something to use as a work vehicle for my job as an independent adjuster. I was going to go to lots of yucky places and didn’t want to destroy/mile out the ST.

I was given a $600 a month car allowance and I knew that by buying new I could write off the mileage/depreciation and, if I got something cheap, I could pocket some of that AND not carry as much financial risk if I got canned.

In the end, I did get laid off and, after 8 months of sitting in my garage, it’s time to let the Kia go. It fulfilled everything I asked of it.

Thanks to Oppo for coming on the journey!

Glad it served its needs, and glad you were able to get rid of it so (relatively) profitably.

Now about that Jeep...

I literally think I made money on it overall with the allowance and write-offs.

Give it a bit! But it's coming

It has consistently been my opinion that the Koreans make pretty decent cars.

Did you look at Stingers? Do Kia sell Stingers in Cannuckistan?

I can’t believe they paid $9800 wholesale for a stick shift sedan with no AC! You killed it on this deal!

A $1700 CAD depreciation hit on a new Kia is quite low, so I think you did well on the purchase, sale or both. And hanging onto a car you aren’t driving, especially one that isn’t special doesn’t really make sense.

I’ve always felt a little bad because I advised you to go cheap when you bought it. I’ve met too many people who given that car allowance would run out and lease the fanciest pickup/BMW/Jeep they could get for $600/month, and that’s clearly a bad idea, but I didn’t mean to encourage you to get a base model Kia. Still it seems it has served you well, and owning it was certainly cheap, so I guess you didn’t do too poorly with it.

It helped that we still had three other cars too!

It was a really good deal given the car allowance and surprisingly low depreciation. I'm shocked you sold it for that much. Good riddance, but it was exactly the car you needed for a while. It'll be nice to not have it taki g up garage space though.

Your next car should be a Micra :o)

If you can’t afford the Micra , get an Echo hatchback

That’s an incredibly low price for a new car. I live in Coquitlam I’m in the market for a super cheap new car right now. I was considering a manual trans Hyundai venue but none of them are priced as low as I want.

Have you looked at manual Mazda cx3's? I recall those being a good deal
